1) What is dye-sublimation—and why it’s perfect for mugs

Dye-sublimation is a heat-transfer process that turns solid dye into gas, which then bonds at a molecular level with the mug’s specially prepared surface. In everyday terms: your design becomes part of the mug’s outer coating rather than sitting on top like a sticker. Because the print is absorbed into the finish, it won’t crack, peel or flake, and it stands up well to daily washing.

At Utterly Printable, our mugs are premium, heat-retentive ceramic with a bright white, high-gloss exterior. That glossy finish provides an excellent canvas for full-colour sublimation, giving photos, logos and text a smooth, zero-texture feel and vivid, fade-resistant colour. Each mug holds 330 ml (11 oz), measures roughly 95 mm tall by 83 mm in diameter (excluding the handle), and is designed for everyday convenience—dishwasher- and microwave-safe.

You can keep things classic with an all-white mug, or add personality with interior/handle colour accents in blue, green, pink, red or yellow. There’s no minimum order, so a single keepsake is just as welcome as a corporate run. Orders placed on weekdays typically aim for next-working-day dispatch, and we send items in robust, recyclable packaging with tracked courier delivery across the UK.

2) From upload to finished mug: the print process, step-by-step

1. Set up your design. Start by uploading your photos, graphics or message to our online designer. You can also choose from hundreds of ready-made templates—everything from minimalist monograms to bold photo collages. For crisp results, 300 DPI images are recommended. The designer provides a live preview and a free digital proof before checkout, helping you spot typos or cropping issues.

2. Printing the transfer. Your artwork is printed (mirrored) onto a specialist transfer sheet using dye-sublimation inks. This is not the final print—it’s the vehicle that carries the dyes to the mug.

3. Positioning on the mug. The printed sheet is wrapped carefully around the exterior of the ceramic mug. Alignment here determines final positioning, so we take the time to get it right. Where available, you can opt for a single-side print (e.g., a left or right-hander placement) or a wraparound layout that brings your design to both sides.

4. Heat and pressure. The mug is placed in a heat press at high temperature. The solid dyes on the transfer convert into gas and fuse with the mug’s polymer-ready glaze, embedding the image.

5. Cooling and finishing. After pressing, the transfer is removed and the mug is allowed to cool. There’s no raised ink film, so the surface remains smooth and glossy.

6. Quality checks and packing. We check colour, alignment and surface quality, then pack each item into a protective, recyclable cardboard mailing box. Single mugs are letterbox-friendly; bulk orders ship securely in outer cartons.

3) Colour, sharpness and positioning: what to expect

Colour & vibrancy. Sublimation excels at high-colour prints. Because dyes diffuse into the coating, tones are rich and continuous—ideal for photography and gradients. Do note that ceramic and screens render colour differently: a glossy mug reflects light and can make colours appear slightly warmer or less backlit than on a phone or laptop. If you’re colour-critical, avoid ultra-neon shades (which rely on on-screen light) and ensure your images are well-exposed with natural contrast.

Sharpness & detail. With good source files (300 DPI at print size), fine detail and small type reproduce cleanly. Avoid hairline strokes or micro-text. For captions and dates, choose fonts with clear shapes and keep text above ~8–9 pt at mug scale for comfortable legibility.

Wraparound and placement. Our process supports vivid, wraparound printing on the exterior. Most designs print beautifully across the main body of the mug; we keep a safe tolerance at the very top rim and base for comfort and durability. If you prefer a single-panel graphic (e.g., just on the side facing you while you sip), that placement is easy to set in the designer. The interior and handle cannot be printed with graphics, but you can select from five accent colours to complement your artwork.

Durability & care. Sublimation prints are built for daily use. The mugs are dishwasher and microwave safe; for longest life, pop them on the dishwasher’s top rack and avoid abrasive scrubbers. As with any printed item, years of heavy use and very strong detergents can soften colours gradually, but under normal home or office conditions the finish resists fading.

Useful pairing ideas. Creating a gift set? Consider matching your mug with one of our personalised notebooks. We have thoughtful options such as notebooks for Mum and notebooks for Dad—a simple way to turn a custom mug into a complete, coordinated present.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

Below are the most common questions about sublimation mug printing at Utterly Printable—short, to-the-point answers so you can upload artwork with confidence.

Will the print fade?

Sublimation embeds dyes into the mug’s glossy coating, producing a fade-resistant finish that copes well with daily washing. For best longevity, place mugs on the dishwasher’s top rack and avoid abrasive pads.

Why can colour look slightly different on ceramic?

Screens emit light; ceramics reflect it. Glossy, curved surfaces and ambient lighting can make a design look a touch warmer or less luminous than on-screen. We print in full colour for accurate, vibrant results, but minor shifts are normal when moving from backlit pixels to printed dyes.

Can you print on the inside or the handle?

No. The design area is the exterior only; interior text or graphics cannot be printed. You can, however, choose accent colours for the interior and handle (blue, green, pink, red or yellow) to coordinate with your artwork.

How sharp will my photo look?

With a good source image (300 DPI at print size), photos and logos reproduce cleanly. Avoid very thin lines, ultra-small text, or dark text on very dark backgrounds.

Can my design wrap all the way around?

Yes—our process supports wraparound printing on the exterior. You can also choose left or right-side placements if you prefer a single panel.

Are the mugs dishwasher and microwave safe?

Yes. Our personalised mugs are dishwasher and microwave safe for everyday convenience.

Can I order just one?

Absolutely—there’s no minimum order. Whether you need one keepsake or a bulk run for branding, you can order the quantity that suits you.

How quickly will my order be dispatched in the UK?

Weekday orders placed before midday typically aim for next working-day dispatch, with tracked courier delivery. At peak times or on larger runs, allow an extra day or two.

Do you ship internationally?

Shipping is to UK addresses only.

What happens if there’s a print fault?

If something goes wrong with the print, we’ll put it right with a free re-print or a full refund. Please report issues within 7 days and include photos so our team can help quickly.
