1) How to structure your wording (UK-friendly)

Start with the essentials, then adjust tone and detail to suit the day:

The essentials

  • Who’s inviting: parents, a single parent, or sometimes grandparents.
  • Child’s full name (include middle names if you like).
  • Event type: Christening, Baptism, or Naming Day.
  • Date & time: “Sunday 23 March 2025 at 11:30am” is a clear UK format.
  • Service venue: church name and town/postcode (e.g., “St Mary’s, Chiswick W4”).
  • Reception: if there’s a get-together afterwards—time, place, and whether food is provided.
  • RSVP: a date, contact details, and (optionally) a QR code to your online RSVP page.
  • Helpful extras: parking notes, dress code (“smart casual”), or a gentle “no presents” line.

Tone choices (with quick-start lines)

  • Formal/traditional: “Mr and Mrs James Carter request the pleasure of your company at the Christening of their daughter…”
  • Warm/family: “We’d love you to join us as we celebrate the christening of…”
  • Modern/minimal: “Please join us for Noah’s baptism — 23.03.2025, 11:30am, St Mary’s, SW1.”

3) Etiquette & practical tips (especially for UK parents)

Christening vs baptism wording

In the Church of England you’ll often see either term; use the one your vicar/parish uses. For a secular celebration, choose “Naming Day” or “Naming Ceremony”.

Who’s hosting?

If both parents are inviting, write “We invite you…”. For a formal approach, “Mr and Mrs… request the pleasure…”. Grandparents hosting is fine too—just list their names first.

Godparents—include or not?

It’s optional. If you include them, place their names after the child’s or on the next line (see examples 3 & 15). If they’re not yet confirmed, simply leave them off.

Private service, wider celebration

Use a gentle line: “after a small family service earlier in the day” or “was christened on… please join us to celebrate on…”. This makes your plan clear without excluding anyone.

Food & timings

If you’re serving lunch, say so. If it’s just tea and cake, that’s equally fine—clarifying avoids confusion.

RSVPs & QR codes

Online replies make head-counts easy. Our cards can include a QR code linking straight to your RSVP page—set one up here: online digital RSVP website. Add a clear date and any info you need (dietary notes, song choices for a blessing, etc.).

Tone & design

Let the artwork guide your copy. Florals and botanicals pair with warm or classic text (floral / botanical), while crisp layouts suit minimal lines (modern). Photo-led designs call for short, simple wording (photo invites).

Printing or digital?

On Utterly Printable you can personalise a design, then order printed cards or download a high-resolution PDF for email/WhatsApp. Card sizes include A5, A6, 5”×7”, and 148×148 mm square, with premium FSC-certified stocks available. Keep copy concise for smaller formats.

Coordinating stationery

If you’re planning a church service, matching Christening Order of Service booklets can help guests follow along—browse designs here: Christening Order of Service.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ questions & answers

Quick, practical answers to the most common wording dilemmas for UK families.

Should we put godparents’ names on the invitation?

Optional. Include them if you wish—either after your child’s name or on a separate line. If you’re still confirming, leave them off and thank them in person on the day.

What’s the best way to handle a private service with a larger celebration?

State it plainly: “after a small family service earlier in the day” or “was christened on [date]; please join us to celebrate on…”.

How do we word RSVPs politely?

Add a firm but friendly deadline (e.g., “RSVP by 1 May”), plus a QR code or link to your online page: set up an RSVP here. “Regrets only” works for informal gatherings.

Do we need a dress code?

Not usually, but if your reception is outdoors or smart, a brief note such as “smart casual” or “wear warm layers for the garden” is helpful.

Can we ask for no presents?

Yes—keep it gentle: “Your presence is the only gift we need,” or “No presents please; your company is more than enough.”

How do we reference food or refreshments?

Be clear: “light lunch to follow,” “tea & cake afterwards,” or “pub lunch from 1pm (please preorder via the RSVP).”

Is “Naming Day” suitable wording for a secular ceremony?

Absolutely. Use “Naming Day” or “Naming Ceremony”; avoid faith-specific terms if they don’t apply.

Any tips for photo-based invitations?

Let the image shine—keep wording short (see examples 16–17). Our photo christening invitations are designed with that in mind.
