1) The anatomy of a premium hardback notebook

A premium notebook starts with its cover. Look for a casebound book with a square spine—this is the classic hardback method where a printed wrap is fixed around a rigid board case. The result is a tidy, bookshelf-ready profile that opens neatly and holds its shape over time.

In practical terms, that thickness matters: the cover won’t flex in a rucksack, and it resists the slow “sag” you often see on lightweight boards. The greyboard is wrapped in 170gsm silk art paper and finished with matt lamination. The lamination is a sealed film that protects the print and keeps the surface wipe-clean, so colours and photos stay crisp.

Inside, you’ll typically find 96 leaves (192 sides) of smooth, uncoated 90gsm FSC paper in lined, dotted or plain layouts. 90gsm is a sweet spot for everyday writing: it feels substantial, helps reduce show-through with most pens, and still keeps the book slim enough for commuting. 2) Cover finishes: matt lamination vs “soft-touch” coatings

You’ll often see notebooks described as “laminated” or “soft-touch”. The terms are related but not identical:

• Matt lamination (what we use): a thin protective film bonded to the printed cover wrap. It resists scuffing, seals the surface against light spills, and is easy to wipe clean. Colours reproduce accurately with a refined, non-glare sheen—ideal for photo covers and bold typography.
• Soft-touch coatings: some budget notebooks use a sprayed or varnished soft-touch effect rather than a true laminated film. It can feel velvety, but coatings like these may pick up marks more readily and won’t always shield the print as effectively as a laminated wrap.

3) Paper, binding and everyday durability

Paper weight & finish. “90gsm uncoated” means each sheet weighs 90 grams per square metre and has a natural, non-shiny surface. Uncoated stock is pleasant to write on, dries quickly and works across pens and pencils. At 90gsm, you should expect minimal feathering and less show-through than lightweight papers, without bulk.

Binding method. A casebound book is built to last. The rigid case protects the block of pages, and the square spine helps pages sit flat when open. This is a practical step up from softcovers if you’re commuting, moving between meeting rooms or tossing your notebook into a student backpack.

Board thickness. A 2.4 mm greyboard core is reassuringly rigid. It prevents corner curl and the mid-cover dip that develops with thin boards. If you ever write on your lap, a sturdy cover makes all the difference.

Lamination & scuff resistance. A matt-laminated wrap handles rubs against laptop shells, textbooks and office furniture better than bare paper or light coatings. It also keeps fingerprinting down compared with ultra-smooth gloss.
